I
remind you that this section of my web sit
is essentially an autobiographical work [link].
As a Notebook, it is a biography in real-time
that moves back and forth between past, present
and future. It so happens that this also
documents ongoing work and therefore is
a place where collogues come for current
project information. As I have noted elsewhere
[link],
I will soon reach a cut off point and create
an entirely separate section for the presentation
of professional projects and finished writings.
I have not done that yet because the present
work is so much part and parcel of the first
chapter of my story which is getting to a
certain place in my work - a place that certainly
is in sight now but not yet quite reached
[link]. |
As
I have stated, this is about context [link] -
it is my firm belief that, although this
co-mingling
of personal and professional thought processes
is unusual, that it is essential for understanding
the work as well as the man. |
The
parts of this Notebook that are produced
directly in html for web publishing are unusually
candid; they are, however, written with the
awareness that they will immediately go onto
a public web site. The hand-written Notebooks
were
not done with this intent in mind. They are,
therefore, another degree more candid and
personal. It was in November of 2003
that I decided to “publish” the several thousand
hand-written pages that I produced between
1979 and today - without this in the record,
the story of the making of MG Taylor is greately
impoverished. This Notebook, represented
by the pages below, is the most recently
completed one and the
first
to be
published. I will work my way backward to
1979 as time allows and publish current Notebooks
as I finish them. These will be published
in their entirety except where certain individual’s
or organization’s privacy may be an issue.
In this case, I will blank out page sections
or omit the page all together. This case
it will be made clear that this has happened. |
What
I ask of you, the reader, is to be aware
that this is, in many cases, sensitive information
and to act accordingly. There are many reasons
for documenting a life - mine is primarily
to pass on what I have experienced and learned
about attempting a serious life in a time
that does not much honor such pursuits. It
is also done to document a number of ideas
and projects, because of their nature or
that of the times, that may have a very long
incubation period and,
if
not
preserved,
may have to
be reinvented from scratch at some future
date.
The record is distorted if not complete.
To be complete, however, means to be exposed.
I am asking you, the reader, to act while
keeping all this in mind. |

This
series of pages make up some of my most important
personal work in several years. During the last
quarter of 2003, I was reassessing myself and my
work - sorting through experiences and circumstances
to
find what is relevant, now. There is no question
that my work is at some kind of tipping-point but
what
this means - and how I should act on it - is not
a simple thing to understand. At the time I was “asking”
these
questions, I was also working through the design
of the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Executive Offices
[link] -
one of the most advanced and difficult designs I
have attempted in decades. These two together -
the questions and the project - caused a great deal
of personal stress and creative tension. These Notebook
pages document how this tension was resolved and
baked into a more advanced understanding, from before,
of what the next few
years may produce. |
It
appears that we are well on our way to achieving
the critical mass necessary for building Xanadu -
a vision that goes back to 1958 [link].
The next round of work, with Vanderbilt, the VA,
SDC, Master’s Academy, perhaps Columbia, Kingsport
and Harmony, can effectively double the critical
mass of the NavCenter ValueWeb putting us within
shouting distance of both the ability to demonstrate
the need for a global response system and the capability
to respond that way when the need is recognized.
Xanadu will come into existence when this capacity
crosses a certain threshold. |
One
thing that emerges from these pages is that it is
time for me to take on the public role of representing
this work in such a way that it becomes a true issue
of choice of our society. It may - or not - succeed,
but it has to be given a life of its own. It is time
for these concepts to leave the nest and it is time
for me relate to them in a different way. 2004 will,
in large part, be about this transition. |
