Intellectual Property protection is a complex issue in the Internet age. Those that create something have the legitimate expectation of fair compensation for their efforts. When works can be easily copied by cheap, high resolution means, their creator’s are particularly vulnerable.

In addition to this, however, there are issues related to the advancement of the common good. Sometimes this clashes with individual control of work. This is where the concept of “Fair Use” comes into play. The purpose of all government IP franchise is to encourage the spreading of ideas. The legal notion is that if works are given protection their creators will be encouraged to produce more and distribute more.

Fair Use usually allows limited coping, in a real-time circumstance for educational purposes and for purposes of criticism. There are temporal limits placed on this practice that make sense in the world of paper but not when related to web publishing.

When creating the picture matrix I was left with the dilemma of how to balance practical concerns with my respect for the photographers, authors, publishers and retailers of these works. It is not possible to convey my points without photos and it is not possible, within any resonable economy, to seek individual permission or travel to re-shoot all these works.

I resolved the conflict by cropping the photos and coping them in low resolution. Credits for each will be provided below, as well as, links to where you can buy the books from which they were copied. I encourage you to do so. A well fitted library is essential to the understanding and practice of architecture. It is also critical to support those that bring you knowledge and pleasure.

I believe that my use of these photos is within the spirit of Fair Use although in a new and controversial space.

Please review IP Policy link below - it covers the conditions by which you can download and use copyrighted material from my site and from MG Taylor, AI, iterations and the KnOwhere Store.
