The
modern workplace is too often a “flatland” environment. Vertical
space is rarely developed. This adversely effects the quality
of light and restricts eye movement [link].
These are not neutral circumstances in their cognitive implications.
Just
as prospect
and refuge must be cultivated in the horizontal plane, every
opportunity should be taken to do so in the vertical dimension
as [link:
Section] eye movement - and physical movement - is
intimately connected to thinking and learning. |

In
terms of utilization of space, vertical arrangements offer
several advantages not found in a single level footprint
of equivalent size. Openness and privacy can be
achieved by putting the more intimate areas away from the
center (horizontally)
and up from the large group areas (vertically). A sense of
one place with easy access is maintained yet sound
(which is beneficial) can work its way around filter by distance.
At the same time,
niches
and quite
areas can be found and cultivated. This creates a natural landscape
for work. |
