Future Views Series Notebook #1
January 25, 2005 to January 1, 2007
link: Caveat

The focus of this Notebook is the reintroduction of my future design work to a broader population, in specific, the publication of Future Views - an idea from the 1980s and the start up period of what is today MG Taylor.

The Notebook has annotations related to a few events/presentations which involved a futures orientation. Most of the material is a “thinking through” of the Future Views concept and how it might be “brought to market” in the present era.

As is usual with my Notebooks, pages are filled in on the right hand page - with a few exceptions where both sides are employed in real time - and then, later comments are placed on the left hand pages. A Summary pieces, written near the end of the Notebooks time period, fills up the remaining space. This is both summing up of the entire Notebook and usually a comment on the material on the right hand page. I “retire” a Notebook only when all of the space is filled. This Notebook is now finished - only the fifth of the 20 Notebooks I have started since September 11, 2001 (although there are many which are lacking a few pages of being “done”).

This Notebook has proven to be uncommonly useful to me although it may be difficult reading for someone else. It is closely connected to the Xanadu, iteration6 and Topping Point Notebooks so this should be kept in mind. There are several electronic Notebook pages that are also highly relevant. These connections are cross referenced and will also be linked electronically as time allows. Remember to let your mouse do the walking.

This Notebook, the first of the Future Views series, was active just one month short of two years. In this period, the WEF WorkSpace has been created, the UniCredit navCenter designed and built and the Leopard Guest House-Studio brought to a final design - now to be built in the Spring of 2008. Also in this period, the MG Taylor Publishing Enterprise has been defined and will be launched the first quarter 08 as the major next step in the implementation of our iteration6 ValueWeb strategy. Future Views is a key component of this venture.

The Events documented in this Notebook: United Methodist Communications, World Economic Forum, Private Wealth Council, IDIAP, ISSS all have a strong future research component. They inform the Future Views effort in that they provide a direct indication of where the establishment leading edge is in terms of its members awareness and concept of future possibilities. How they responded to my material, both positively and negatively, has helped me formulate the Future Views strategy, format and timing of market entry - which is now one year later than the early expectations noted in this Notebook.

This Notebook documents the evolution of my thinking about the Future Views offering and its place in the system of MG Taylor work and my personal practice of it. It rests on the simple premise that humanity lacks a coherent, positive, actionable view of the future and is engaged in the spin and distortion of cultural wars (often leading to real wars) instead of developing a reasonable dialog about our options. Future Views, in concert with Weak Signal Research, ReBuilding the Future and other publication and educational projects, offers an alternative path to the one that we are on. Future Views is designed to become a strong force in the marketplace of ideas. If it will or not remains to be seen. The thrust of my work is to offer tested options, not to impose them even if that were possible. These are not times which engender optimism. Yet, we have to remember that for a new paradigm to be born the old one has to die. The existing paradigm is clearly crumbing. What will replace it is not a given. It is on this choice that the Future Views program is focused.
